Near the village of Arcenant, in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, lie 4.5 hectares of possibly the oldest organically farmed vines in all of Burgundy. Planted in 1971 by his father Alain, they have been under the watchful care of 40 year-old Aurélien Verdet since he took over the family domain in 2005.
Aurélien is known to keep a low profile, preferring to spend his time tending to his vineyards. In his cellar, he favours minimal intervention, producing wines with the purity and personality of the best Pinot Noirs. Every vintage is beautifully adapted to the style of the season.
His range includes juicily approachable Villages and excellent Premiers Crus, including Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St-Georges. They have been described by critics as “admirable purity […] giving plenty of pleasure […] very very good value.”
Aurélien Verdet embodies this new generation of talented winemakers who choses to fly under the radar. We suspect that his wines won’t remain hidden gems for long.
